About MLK Quotes

MLK Quotes is a free archive of quotations from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is built so you can find the right words fast, know where they come from, and copy them without guessing at the wording.

Most quote sites give you a line and an author. This one gives you the line, the speech, sermon, letter or book it came from, the year, and for many quotes a short note on what was happening when King said it. That context is often what makes the difference between a quote that fits your caption, speech or lesson and one that does not.

How the quotes are organised

Quotes are sorted by theme (love, justice, peace, hope, leadership, and more), by moment (MLK Day, a classroom, ashort caption), and by famous speech ("I Have a Dream").

How a quote gets checked

  1. The wording is compared against a published text: a book King wrote, a speech or sermon transcript, or a letter held in a reputable archive.
  2. The source line under the quote names the work and year, so you can look it up yourself.
  3. If a line is widely shared but cannot be tied to a specific speech, sermon or book, it is labelled "widely attributed" instead of being presented as confirmed.
  4. Where King's phrasing appears in slightly different forms across editions or recordings, the page uses the published text.

The full list of works used, with links to the archives that hold them, is on theSources and Attribution page.

Ricardo selects the quotes for this archive, matches each one to a published source, and writes the short context notes and introductions on each page. When a reader points out a line that is misattributed or worded differently in the published text, the fix goes in and the source note is updated.
